Bottled Water: Necessity or Luxury in Modern Society

Step into any supermarket today, and you will witness an overwhelming range of options for even the most basic necessities. Want some chips or a refreshing cold drink? Brace yourself for a mind-boggling selection of ten different brands, each competing for your attention with five different flavors. But what surprises me the most is that the very same phenomenon applies to water! Picture this: a brown bottle claiming to be copper-enriched; a blue one boasting vitamin infusion; and the list goes on, expanding faster than our already overflowing shopping carts.
But let’s pause here for a minute and ask ourselves this: just how beneficial are these fancy-packaged bottles for our health? Do we really need to rely on them? Can’t our trusty RO water back at home suffice? Can we avoid these packaged water bottles that, not to forget, add to environmental pollution and still lead a healthy life?
Before you read further, let me emphasize that these infused waters, of course, won’t harm your health; they might actually be beneficial in their own way. However, my question here is: how important are these added infusions for our well-being? Are they necessary or required for us to prioritize in our daily intake?
Moving on, in this article, let me debunk two myths:
- The notion that you must drink packaged water infused with essential nutrients and vitamins to stay healthy.
- RO water filters out the necessary nutrients from your water.
While you may think that packaged water bottles with added nutrients and vitamins provide all the essential elements our bodies need, the reality is quite different. These products are not the sole source from which our body obtains what is necessary. Our bodies acquire them through a well-balanced diet that includes a variety of wholesome foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and more. While hydration is crucial, it is not suggested to rely solely on infused water to meet all your dietary requirements. Don’t feel compelled to spend your money on packaged bottles claiming to be a one-stop solution for your nutritional needs. Instead, focus on maintaining a well-rounded diet and staying properly hydrated with regular, clean drinking water. This leads me to our good old RO.
Drinking water from reliable sources, such as RO water, is generally sufficient to meet our hydration needs. But what about the minerals and vitamins that are said to be stripped from your water while it goes through the filtration process?
Let me first explain the whole reverse osmosis process to you. A very simple, text-book explanation would be:
“Reverse Osmosis (RO) is a water purification process that uses a semi-permeable membrane to remove impurities, contaminants, and minerals from water. The RO filtration system operates by applying pressure to force water molecules through the membrane while leaving behind larger particles and dissolved substances. As a result, RO water is generally free from most minerals, chemicals, and heavy metals.”
Now, the packaged bottles will also go through the same process but will have certain things added back into them. Again, the fact here remains the same: you do not need these barely added minerals in your water; you only need it to be pure from other harmful elements. However, the only concern with RO water could be this: traditional water purifiers are designed to purify all kinds of water the same way. This can lead to it under-purifying or over-purifying your water.
If you’re thinking, “Can water actually be over-purified?” Yes! It absolutely can, and this is the only concern you should have if you rely on traditional water purifiers for your daily water intake. A simple solution to this would be to switch to a customized water purifier that has filters that address the issues your water is facing and filters it accordingly.
In conclusion, our unsung hero here is, hands down, RO-filtered water.
– When filtered the right way, it provides your body with the hydration it requires.
– It does not add to environmental pollution like plastic.
– You don’t have to burn a hole in your pocket for it.
So, there you go, I have laid forward the facts for you. The choice is now yours to make. Be smart and always make the choice to drink clean, safe, and healthy drinking water.
